Alexander the Great + Macedonia

In class, we took notes out of the textbook on pages 142- 145. The notes were on Alexander's empire, Philip II (his father), and the conquering of regions. The main idea of the passage was that Alexander the Great conquered Persia and Egypt and extended his empire to the Indus River in northwest India. Here are the rest of my notes:
- Philip II: a Macedonian king that dreamed of taking control of Greece and then moving against Persia to seize its vast wealth.
- Kingdom of Macedonia: located just north of Greece, had rough terrain and a cold climate.
- The greeks looked down on the Macedonians, whereas the Macedonians thought of themselves as greeks.
-  Macedonia had shrewd and fearless kings.
- Philip: 23 years old when he became king, brilliant general, and ruthless politician.
- Demosthenes: an Athenian orator, who tried to warn the greeks of the threat Philip and his army posed.
- The greeks attempted to unite and fight against the Macedonians, but failed to agree on a policy. The Macedonians defeated the greeks at the battle of Chaeronea.
- Alexander became king after his father's (Philip) death.
- Alexander had many accomplishments over the next 13 years he ruled. He became known as Alexander the Great.

- He used the Iliad as inspiration and was taught academics by the philosopher Aristotle.
- Persian king= Darius III
- Alexander and his army had fought for 11 years and marched more than 11,000 miles.
